Pingree Joins Censure Resolution Following President Trump's Racist Immigration Comments

Press Release

Date: Jan. 18, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) cosponsored a censure resolution in response to President Donald Trump's racist comments stating that America should turn away immigrants from African nations and Haiti and allow more immigrants from countries like Norway. Pingree is one of nearly 150 cosponsors of the resolution in the U.S. House, the full resolution can be found here.

Specifically, the resolution censures President Trump for the following:

Questioning whether Haitians needed to be included in the compromise. "Haitians, why do we need more Haitians? Take them out," President Trump said.
Referring to African countries as "shitholes" or "shithouses;" and
Suggesting that instead of accepting immigrants from predominately black Haiti and African countries, the United States should instead allow more immigration from predominately white countries like Norway.
Last week, following reports that President Trump used vulgar slurs to refer to non-white immigrants to the U.S., Pingree released the following statement:

"President Trump's racist comments about immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador, and countries in Africa are absolutely sickening, even for him. It's frightening to have someone in the White House with this kind of ignorance and lack of compassion. He knows absolutely nothing about these people--the pain they've faced, their harrowing journeys, or their commitment to our country, much less the cultural vibrancy of the countries they came from. His words are slanderous to our legacy as a nation of immigrants."

The resolution, introduced by Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-LA) and House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), is the second Pingree has cosponsored in response to racist actions by President Trump. Last August, following President Trump's failure to immediately condemn the violent rally held by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Pingree cosponsored another censure resolution in the U.S. House.
